Wyeth-Tootle Mansion.
This sprawling mansion from the late 19th century features antique furnishings and art. By appointment, tours can be taken. The mansion is worth a visit for history buffs. Special events include a black tie gala and other special events.
Historic mansion, the Wyeth-Tootle Manor is located at 11th & Charles sts. William M. Wyeth built the mansion in 1879. Mann Architects designed it in Gothic style. They had travelled extensively throughout Europe to gather ideas and build the mansion which was completed in 1883. The Tootles lived there until 1887 when it was sold.
The mansion is three stories high and has a tower. The house contains more than 40 rooms. Beautiful woodwork and imported stained glasses are some of the interior's highlights. It is possible to see what it was like living in the 19th century. The Wyeths-Tootle Mansion, located in downtown St. Joseph is a great place to visit. A history book on Huston's father William Wyeth is available if you are interested in the area's history.
Huston Wyeth was a well-known businessman and held many positions within the city. He was actively involved in the city’s arts and manufacturing industries. He was president of St. Joseph Humane Society, and served as a member of the Blue Valley Creamery Co. He was also involved at the American Museum of Natural History and the Waterways League of America. He was also a member the St. Joseph Duck Club, the Wyeth Duck Club, the Audubon Society, and the St. Joseph Duck Club. He was also the president and founder of the St. Joseph Hardware Company.
